Wiyaala Shines At AU

Published

on

Afro-pop singer Noella Wiyaala last Sunday lifted the flag of Ghana high when she rocked the stage at the 32nd Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) in Ethiopia.

The 32-year-old Afro-pop artiste from Funsi, near Wa in the Upper West Region, who sings in her native Sissala and Waale and English, set the entire Multipurpose Hall on fire when she performed at an event dubbed ‘SDG Moment’ to help achieve the United Nations much talked-about Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Dressed in a typical African and Northern Ghana traditional wear, the energy with which she performed the single track held everyone in the room spellbound, drawing intermittent applause in spite of the poor sound quality provided by the technical men at the AU.

This was after she had been introduced by Ghana’s own Anita Erskine, who was the MC for the occasion as ‘the young lioness of Africa’.

She suddenly became the toast of the day, with almost everybody wanting to either shake her hand or take a picture with her.

The Afro-pop singer has rocked a number of international platforms alongside some of the celebrated international artistes, including Ahmed Soultan.

She was also the headline artiste at the 15th London African Music Festival held in London .

Wiyaala emerged as a solo artiste in 2013 and released two video hit singles on the Djimba World Label, ‘Make Me Dance’ and ‘Rock My Body’, which were both nominated for awards in the best discovery and the best reggae/dancehall categories in Ghana’s 4Syte TV Music Video Awards for 2013.

In May 2014, Wiyaala was confirmed as the face of Pepsi Ghana and in June 2014 was nominated for female fashion personality of the year at the Fashion Icons Awards.

In 2015, Wiyaala received six nominations for the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, winning best songwriter and best female vocal.

At the second edition of the All African Music Awards 2015, Wiyaala won best video for ‘Africa’, directed by Stanley Adjetey.

‘I brought rap home to Ghanaians’ – Obrafour recounts his ‘Pae Mu Ka’ experience

Published

on

It has been 20 years since Ghanaian rapper, Michael Elliot Kwabena Okyere-Darko, known in showbiz as Obrafour got into the music space and he tells the inspiration behind his style of music.

According to the ‘Rap Priest’, he decided to introduce a type of rap music which was a departure from what was in vogue in the late 90s because he sought to be different.

He told Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi 97.3 FM that he wanted to sound just like himself and not like any other person.

He said, at that time, other rappers were doing rap music in English accent.

“At that time all rappers were trying to copy Reggie Rockstone. People thought it required some swag to rap. They thought you had to have an accent.”

“But I came in and I was original. I brought rap home to Ghanaians. Everybody could relate to me and that is what made Pae Mu Ka what it is today. It was original, it was me, it was purely Ghanaian,” he further noted.

Obrafour is known for the depth of his lyrics and his command of the Twi language.

Having produced mega hits like ‘Kwame Nkrumah’, ‘Ohene’, ‘Ntetiepa’, ‘Asem Sebe’, ‘Sete’ and ‘Maame,’ he launched his 20 years anniversary at the Tang Palace in Accra on Thursday and outlined activities tabled for the celebration.

As part of the celebration, there shall be a symposium on the hiplife Obrafour and his contribution to the genre.

Obrafour will also have a cypher for rappers who would ride the ‘Pae Mu Ka’ beat.

This will air on television and Obrafour’s social media pages.

The management has included in the schedule a regional tour which covers Koforidua, Techiman, Kumasi, Takoradi and ends in Accra with a big concert.

He will also be championing a social responsibility project called Obrafour Nti where schools in rural communities would be given support in terms of infrastructure, scholarships and teaching aids.
