GILLY Police REPORT: Md. tennis instructor accused of sleeping with teenage athlete more than 30 times

A respected tennis instructor is accused of having a long-standing sexual affair with a 16-year-old girl he had been hired to coach, but that instructor claims he did nothing wrong.

The allegations levied against Claude Grady, 38, of Gaithersburg, date back more than a decade, and cover the span of 24 months.

According to police, the then 16-year-old victim signed up for lessons at the Aspen Hill Club, and was paired with Grady. During a Saturday afternoon lesson in May 2009, Grady allegedly pinned the victim against the wall of a tennis court and started kissing her.

“The victim advised this incident gave her a panic attack and she went to sit on a nearby bench,” detectives wrote in court documents obtained by ABC7. “When Claude came near to sit next to her, the victim stated she scooted away from him.”

The victim recounted that the unexpected courtside kiss eventually led to a “consensual” sexual relationship that went on for two years. The more than 30 alleged private encounters were crude, typically taking place in Grady’s car, sometimes while parked outside of an elderly care center located near the tennis club. The victim shared that each meet up occurred before, during or after her scheduled tennis lessons.

The alleged abuse stopped in May 2011, however, court records do not detail how or why it came to an end.

ABC7 contacted the Aspen Hill Club for comment. General manager Danielle Bouchard shared that the facility hired Grady as a tennis coach in 2002. In 2006, it rolled out new protocol requiring all employees working with children undergo background and fingerprint checks. Grady took those tests and passed, Bouchard explained.

Then in January 2012, Montgomery County Police contacted the Aspen Hill Club after the teenage victim first came forward with her allegations. The club terminated Grady five days later, however, police ultimately opted not to file charges against the then 32-year-old.

“At this time, I am not aware of any other allegations against Mr. Grady and have no further comment on the issue,” Bouchard told ABC7.

According to court filings, Grady is currently employed as a tennis coach at Montgomery Tennis, which is based at the Montgomery TennisPlex in Germantown.

A bio posted on the club’s website states Grady attended Bullis School in Potomac during the 1990s. There he played tennis under legendary coach Jack Schore. Grady went on to attend the University of Kentucky where he continued his tennis career while majoring in management studies.

“Claude is known for the high level of care and attention he gives to his players, along with an especially high tennis IQ, which is conveyed to all of his players,” Grady’s online bio with Montgomery Tennis states.

When reached by telephone Thursday, a Montgomery Tennis representative declined comment.

During his bond review, Montgomery County District Court Judge Sherri Koch granted Grady a $25,000 bond, which required he post 10 percent ($2,500) for release. Grady walked out of jail that same day. His bond conditions include no unsupervised contact with minors.

Grady — who is scheduled to return to Montgomery County District Court on August 2 for a status hearing —did not return a phone call seeking comment. His defense attorney, Barry Helfand, however, underscored to ABC7 that Montgomery County Police and the FBI investigated his client seven years ago. It was Helfand’s understanding that both agencies cleared Grady of any wrongdoing at that time.

“They found no crime, and now for reasons unknown to us, these charges were brought,” Helfand remarked. “My client denies in as strong of words as he can that he committed no crime.”

Following his termination from the Aspen Hill Club, Grady worked as a “senior coach” for the Hong Tennis Training Center in Gaithersburg. He spent around two years there.

Grady is married and lives in a townhome community along Caulfield Lane in Gaithersburg. He faces up to 25 years in prison.
